Historical Importance in Mughal History

Mughal Influence on Sirhind

Like most of North India, this region too was under the Mughal rule for more than 400 years, and this left a mark on the architecture of the area. Many tombs, gardens and monuments in the region around Sirhind follow the typical architectural style developed by the Mughals. Some of the major attractions in this town include the Aam Khaas Baugh which was a garden built specially for Emperor Shah Jehan but was also open to the public. Even today, many people go to this park to get a taste of nature.

During the famous Jorh Mel at Fatehgarh Sahib, the light and sound show regarding the history of Sirhind and the martyrdom of younger sons of Guru Gobind Singh is shown to the visitors at night in the Aam Khas Baugh. Two magnificent tombs are located a short distance away from the city – known locally as ‘Ustad ki Mazar’ and ‘Shagird ki Mazar’ meaning the Tomb of the Master and the Tomb of the Apprentice. These are the tombs of the famous Mughal architect Ustad Syad Khan and his apprentice Khawaja Khan.
